About the first auto in Petersburg, WV: In 1907 the first automobile, a Ford, came to Grant County. Shown here is reportedly that first automobile in Petersburg owned and operated by R. W. Baker. The passenger in the car is Sanford Bumphrey, a blind piano tuner. The auto is gliding across the old Pond Bridge and to the left can be seen a horse tied to the hitching post beside the old Grant County Bank which was located where Denault's Jewelry was at the corner of Water Street and Main Street. The building above was the residence of the late Mrs. Ellen Thalaker, where the present old Grant County Bank is located. The picture was taken in about 1910 courtesy of K. R. Shobe and Ed VanMeter of Petersburg, WV.
