Cadillac founder, Henry Leland, developed his skills as a fine machinist under firearm manufacturer, Samuel Colt. He moved to Detroit in 1890 to produce precision gears and was soon making steam engines for street cars.

After developing the gas engine for the 1901 Curved Dash Olds, he attracted a group of financial backers who partnered with him to form the Cadillac Motor Company, named for the French explorer who had discovered Detroit in the early 18th Century. Cadillac pioneered the interchangeability of parts prior to Ford’s assembly line. Its cars won many awards, leading to the advertising slogan, “Standard of the World.”

I do not know if Leyland developed the Olds engine, he was one of 2 machine shops producing them. The other was Dodge. It was said an owner could tell who's engine they had as Leyland & Faulconer was built to tighter specs and ran better. 
The way Leyland came to Cadillac was interesting. The investors in the Henry Ford Motor Co were disturbed with their chief mechanic, Henry Ford. Ford was to busy building race cars while the investors wanted a production car.
Meanwhile, Leyland developed an improved version of the Olds single cylinder and presented it to the Smith Bros. ( owners of Olds ). They rejected it probably because they were doing well without it. 
Leyland brought it to the Henry Ford Motor Co. and the management hired Leyland and Ford left. The company was renamed Cadillac.
Leyland's development of interchangeability in the auto industry was a necessary step in developing mass production and the moving assembly line. For this, Cadillac received the first of its two Dewar Trophies. The second was for the electric starter in 1911.
The early automotive history is such a " soap opera " and the people so entangled with each other!
