Dick, the owner of this important piece of history, sent an e mail telling the back story of his Beetle:

My car was bought new in NY City at Hoffman's and was driven back to Eastern Ohio. Hoffman was a foreign car importer of several brands. The VW is actually called a Pre -October 52.  It is really a 51 with the Crotch Cooler vents in the front qtr. panels, that is the ONLY year VW had those. There are several things different on a true 52. There are some crazy differences between the early and late 52's and 53's, way too much to get into now.
I am the second owner and it had only 32K miles on it when I bought it in 1981. I think it had sat in a barn since 1968, It least that was the license plate date on it. It does have hydraulic brakes on it and you better leave plenty of room to get it stopped. The crash box ( non -  synchromesh ) transmission is a real treat to drive.  I do like to bring it to Hershey from time to time because most of the people have never seen a Split Window Bug.  Thanks again... Dick...    PS - Two years ago I was invited to bring it to the Louisville Concours de Elegance at Churchill Downs. They had a Historical Preservation class and it won 1st place. It was an awesome big time show.
